‘Sheng Concertino "The Flow"’ is inspired by the composer's various combinations of the meanings and concepts for the word "流" (liú), including "spread,” "flow direction," "trend," "popular," "confluence," etc. The piece is not developed from a single musical motive, but like flowing water, constantly advancing with the flow of the music. An expansive picture is constructed throughout the piece that describes the evolution of shēng writing from traditional to contemporary idioms.
The work consists of two sections that are played by a 24-reed traditional sheng and a 36-reed sheng respectively. In addition to using a large number of traditional performance techniques for the sheng, the first section explores the possibility of presenting a variety of musical textures through the combination of sheng techniques, like an abstract painting. In the second section, the music draws on various musical styles and technique, including: the playing of accordion and tango styles, Japanese animation music, film and television music and jazz music.
